Social Location Activity

One of the Three Components of Transformational Coaching is The Systems. According to the Aguilar, "By recognizing the broader institutions, structures, and organizations in which we work, we can evaluate our spheres of influence and control, identify entry points for making change in those larger systems, and appreciate the interconnectedness of all things" (p. 38).

This is commonly understood as socio-political consciousness, and it is a central part of being culturally responsive. It’s incumbent on everyone working in education to honestly locate and authentically understand their own positioning within the US social system.

Using the spectrum in the image below, assess and plot your position on a continuum of power in US American society. Indicate by typing number you think represents your positioning, based on your group membership (i.e. -6, 0, +10). Be sure to explain why.

For example:

"As a cisgender, upper middle class, Black woman who has an advanced degree, I would place myself at +3. I'm more proximate to power than many because of my class and education, but less proximate because of my race and gender"

Note - this is not about how one views themselves, but rather the social and political power afforded individuals based on their group membership.
